🌋 La Fortuna: The Ultimate Tourist Guide

La Fortuna is the “adventure capital” of Costa Rica. The drive from San Jose takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, and the journey through the mountains is an adventure in itself.

🌲 Must-See Attractions:

  • Arenal Volcano National Park: Hike the “Arenal 1968” trails, where you can literally walk on lava flows from the historic eruption and catch the most iconic views of the volcano’s perfect cone.
  • La Fortuna Waterfall: A breathtaking 230-foot drop tucked away in the jungle. Be prepared to hike down (and back up!) about 500 steps, but the swim in the cool river at the bottom is totally worth it.
  • Mistico Hanging Bridges: Walk across 16 bridges (6 of them hanging) at heights of up to 150 feet. It’s the best way to spot sloths, toucans, and monkeys from the canopy level.
  • Hot Springs: The area is famous for its geothermal rivers. You can opt for a luxury experience at Tabacón Thermal Resort or find the “secret” free hot springs in the river right off the main road.

🚗 Getting There from San Jose:

The fastest and most comfortable route is taking Highway 1 to San Ramon (Route 702).

  • Pro Tip: If you take the alternative Route 141, make sure to stop in the town of Zarcero to see the famous topiary garden with its uniquely shaped shrubs.
  • Driving Conditions: The roads are fully paved, but they are very “windy” (lots of curves). I highly recommend driving during daylight hours, as the mountain passes often get hit with heavy fog.
